Workshop con Lukas Birk, fotografo riconosciuto e affermato, narratore, conservatore ed editore.

 

Il workshop invita i partecipanti a esplorare le infinite possibilità di lavoro con gli archivi. Che si tratti di collezioni personali, fotografie di famiglia, documenti ufficiali, ritratti in studio o documenti dimenticati, qualsiasi forma di materiale d’archivio può essere il punto di partenza per una narrazione potente.

Durante il workshop, i materiali portati dai partecipanti saranno utilizzati dal gruppo di lavoro. Insieme, esploreremo diversi metodi per interpretare, organizzare e trasformare gli archivi in nuove storie. Queste narrazioni possono assumere molte forme: una cronaca familiare personale, uno studio storico, un libro artistico, una mostra o anche un progetto concettuale.

L’elemento chiave è il materiale d’archivio di ciascun partecipante. Attraverso discussioni di gruppo, esercizi e casi di studio, vedremo come gli archivi possono andare oltre la semplice conservazione per diventare strumenti attivi di narrazione. Il conduttore del workshop, Lukas Birk, condividerà esempi tratti dai suoi progetti per illustrare diversi approcci alla strutturazione del materiale, dimostrando come gli archivi possano essere trasformati in libri, mostre o narrazioni culturali più ampie.

Questo workshop è ideale per fotografi, ricercatori, artisti, storici e chiunque sia interessato all’intersezione tra memoria, materiali e narrazione. Non è necessaria alcuna esperienza precedente, ma solo il desiderio di impegnarsi a fondo con i propri materiali e le storie che possono raccontare. Ogni partecipante deve avere a disposizione materiale d’archivio da portare al workshop.

Workshop with Lukas Birk, award winning photographer, storyteller, conservator, and publisher.

 

The workshop invites participants to explore the endless possibilities of working with archives. Whether you bring personal collections, family photographs, official records, studio portraits, or forgotten documents, any form of archival material can be the starting point for a powerful narrative.

Throughout the workshop, we will collectively engage with the materials that participants bring. Together, we will explore different methods of interpreting, arranging, and transforming archives into new storylines. These narratives can take many forms: a personal family chronicle, a historic study, an artistic book, an exhibition, or even a conceptual project.

The key element is the material itself, each participant’s archive is the foundation. Through group discussions, exercises, and case studies, we will look at how archives can move beyond simple preservation to become active storytelling tools. Workshop leader, Lukas Birk, will share examples from his own projects to illustrate different approaches to structuring archival material, demonstrating how archives can be shaped into books, exhibitions, or broader cultural narratives.

This workshop is ideal for photographers, researchers, artists, historians, and anyone interested in the intersection of memory, material, and storytelling. No previous experience is necessary, only the desire to engage deeply with your materials and the stories they can tell. Each participant has to have a set of archival material at hand to bring to the workshop.

Lukas Birk è un fotografo, narratore, conservatore ed editore pluripremiato.
I suoi progetti multidisciplinari sono stati trasformati in film, cronache, mostre su larga scala e libri, spesso lavorando con materiale d’archivio raccolto durante i suoi viaggi o dal suo stesso background. Birk si concentra sulle regioni colpite da conflitti, dove ricerca e reinterpreta le immagini esistenti per creare narrazioni alternative che mescolano fatti storici con elementi di finzione.
Ha fondato programmi di residenza per artisti in Cina e Indonesia e ha avviato importanti progetti di archivio come l’Afghan Box Camera Project e il Myanmar Photo Archive. Il suo marchio editoriale, Fraglich Publishing, è specializzato in storia della fotografia.

Lukas Birk is an award winning photographer, storyteller, conservator, and publisher.
His multi-disciplinary projects have been turned into films, chronicles, large scale exhibitions and books, often working with archival material collected during his travels or from his own background. Lukas focuses on regions affected by conflict, where he researches and reinterprets existing imagery to create alternative narratives that blend historical fact with fictional elements.
He founded artist residency programmes in China and Indonesia and initiated major archive projects such as the Afghan Box Camera Project and the Myanmar Photo Archive. His publishing imprint, Fraglich Publishing, specialises in photographic history.
