Nelle lastre di Fotoscopia risplende la fulminante bellezza dei metodi diagnostici, esposta per celebrare la propulsione esplorativa dell’Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova di Reggio Emilia e i cinquant’anni della sua sede. Nell’opera di Alessandra Calò trovano posto senza gerarchie le topografie d’archivio e gli schizzi esegetici dei dottori, gli screening mammografici e i pesci rossi della sala d’attesa. La ricerca dei materiali – condotta tra i reparti in decine di colloqui con medici, infermieri, tecnici e inservienti – ha seguito un approccio domestico, utile a rappresentare uno spazio dove la vita della comunità continua nei suoi ritmi quotidiani.

The brilliant beauty of diagnostic methods shines in the Fotoscopia plates, exhibited to celebrate the exploratory propulsion of the Arcispedale Santa Maria Nuova in Reggio Emilia and the fifty years of its headquarters. In Alessandra Calò’s work, the archival topographies and the exegetic sketches of the doctors, the mammographic screenings and the goldfish in the waiting room find a place without hierarchies. The search for materials – conducted among the departments in dozens of interviews with doctors, nurses, technicians and orderlies – followed a domestic approach, useful for representing a space where the life of the community continues in its daily rhythms.

Artista e fotografa, Alessandra Calò utilizza un linguaggio fotografico sperimentale per approfondire temi legati alla memoria, all’identità e al rapporto tra uomo e natura. Attraverso il recupero e la reinterpretazione di materiali d’archivio non intende attuare una rievocazione nostalgica del passato, ma proporre una nuova visione della realtà. Nel corso degli anni si è appassionata ad antiche tecniche di stampa fotografica con le quali realizza vere e proprie installazioni e libri d’artista. Nei suoi progetti vengono coinvolte spesso autrici contemporanee per creare immagini parlanti attraverso la contaminazione letteraria. Le sue opere fanno parte di importanti collezioni private e museali, sono esposte in fiere, mostre e festival internazionali.
An artist and photographer, Alessandra Calò uses an experimental photographic language to explore themes related to memory, identity and the relationship between man and nature. The dominant practice in her work is the recovery and reinterpretation of archive materials through which does not intend to implement a nostalgic evocation of the past but to propose a new vision of reality. Over the years, she has developed a passion for ancient photographic printing techniques with which she creates real installations and artist’s books. Contemporary authors are often involved in her projects to create speaking images through literary contamination. Her works are part of important private and museum collections and are exhibited at international fairs, exhibitions and festivals.
