Hayal & Hakikat

Hayal & Hakikat (Sogno & Fatto) è un’installazione visiva immersiva che espande il fotolibro omonimo in un’esperienza spaziale. Radicata negli archivi fotografici dell’Impero Ottomano, l’installazione trasforma un documento storico di classificazione visiva in una riflessione brutale ma ponderata su giustizia, amnistia e libertà. Durante il venticinquesimo anno di regno, Abdulhamid II ordinò di fotografare i detenuti con le mani in vista in previsione di un’amnistia, influenzato da teorie pseudo-scientifiche lette in un romanzo poliziesco. “Hayal” (Sogno) rappresenta il desiderio di perdono dei prigionieri, mentre “Hakikat” (Fatto) rivela la loro realtà, prigionieri incatenati e condannati a morte.

 

Hayal & Hakikat (Dream & Fact) is an immersive visual installation that expands the photobook of the same name into a spatial experience. Rooted in photography archives of the Ottoman Empire, the installation transforms a historic record of visual classification into a brutal yet thoughtful reflection on justice, amnesty, and freedom. During the 25th year of his reign, Abdulhamid II ordered photographs of prisoners with their hands out in anticipation of an amnesty, influenced by pseudo-scientific theories read in a detective novel. “Hayal” (Dream) represents the prisoners’ desire for forgiveness, while “Hakikat” (Fact) reveals their reality, prisoners chained and sentenced to death.

Cemre Yeşil Gönenli è una fotografa e artista turca con base a Istanbul. Ha studiato fotografia alla Istanbul Bilgi University e arti visive alla Sabancı University. Il suo lavoro è stato esposto e pubblicato a livello internazionale (“The Guardian”, “ICP New York”, “BJP”, “Colors Magazine”, “Istanbul Modern”). Il libro Hayal & Hakikat (2020) ha vinto il PhotoEspaña 2021 ed è stato finalista a Paris Photo e Les Rencontres d’Arles. È docente alla Istanbul Bilgi University e fondatrice di FiLBooks, casa editrice e spazio per fotolibri e workshop. Lavora anche come curatrice, scrittrice ed editrice.

 

Cemre Yeşil Gönenli is a Turkish photographer and artist based in Istanbul. She studied photography at Istanbul Bilgi University and visual arts at Sabancı University. Her work has been exhibited and published internationally (The Guardian, ICP New York, BJP, Colors Magazine, Istanbul Modern). The book Hayal & Hakikat (2020) won the PhotoEspaña 2021 and was a finalist at Paris Photo and Les Rencontres d’Arles. She is a lecturer at Istanbul Bilgi University and founder of FiLBooks, a publishing house and space for photo books and workshops. She also works as a curator, writer and editor.
